Tsuboichi Seicha Hojicha Latte Mix 80g is a hojicha latte powder from a Sakai tea house founded in 1850. It is made with first-picked stem hojicha — the roasted twig grade, chosen by Tsuboichi's tea master for an aroma strong enough to carry through milk — and sweetened only with Japanese beet sugar and wasanbon, the fine-grained traditional sugarcane sugar. The whole ingredient list is three items: sugar, green tea and wasanbon. There is no milk powder in the pouch, so you pour your own milk and set the strength yourself; the maker states that soy milk works just as well. Tsuboichi adds no flavourings, no preservatives and no artificial sweeteners, and states the product is made in Japan from 100% Japanese ingredients. The pack carries dairy-free and halal marks. One 80 g pouch makes about ten cups and reseals with a zip.
About Tsuboichi Seicha
Tsuboichi Seicha Honpo Co., Ltd. (株式会社つぼ市製茶本舗) began in March 1850 as the tea merchant Yamaichi in Sakai, Osaka — the home town of the tea master Sen no Rikyū. The old Sakai town district burned during the war and the company moved to nearby Takaishi in 1945, where it is still headquartered; the present company was incorporated in 1991. It holds FSSC 22000, Organic JAS and halal certification.
What is hojicha?
Hojicha (ほうじ茶) is Japanese green tea that has been roasted over high heat, which turns the leaf reddish-brown and replaces the grassy notes of an unroasted tea with a warm, toasty aroma closer to roasted grain. Roasting also drives off much of the caffeine, so hojicha is the tea Japanese households commonly drink in the evening and serve to children. This one is made from bo-hojicha (棒ほうじ茶) — the stems and twigs rather than the leaf, a grade prized for being especially fragrant and mild.
