S&B Torokeru Hayashi Rice Gravy Mix (とろけるハヤシ) 160g — a block-form Japanese hayashi-rice roux from S&B's "Torokeru" (melt-in-the-mouth) range. Snap in the blocks and they dissolve into a glossy, deeply savoury tomato- and mushroom-based demi-glace gravy for hashed-beef rice. Eight servings per 160g box (20g each). The roux itself contains no meat-derived ingredients — you stir-fry your own sliced beef and onion into it.
About S&B Foods
S&B Foods (エスビー食品株式会社) was founded in 1923 by Minejiro Yamazaki in Asakusa, Tokyo, where he produced Japan's first commercial domestic curry powder. The "S&B" mark — combining "Sun" and "Bird" — was added to the trademark in 1931. The flagship Red Can Curry Powder launched in 1950, the Golden Curry (ゴールデンカレー) roux range followed, and in 1970 S&B pioneered the tube format for wasabi, karashi and ginger condiments — now a Japanese kitchen staple.
What is hayashi rice?
Hayashi rice (ハヤシライス) is a classic Japanese yoshoku (Western-influenced) comfort dish — thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a rich, savoury tomato-and-demi-glace sauce and served over steamed rice. It is a staple of Japanese home cooking, served much the same way as Japanese curry, and largely unknown outside Japan.
How to use & enjoy
The roux is used just like a Japanese curry block: stir-fry sliced beef and onions, add water, then melt in the block and simmer into a glossy gravy (per S&B). Ways to enjoy it:
-
Classic hayashi rice — ladle the gravy alongside a mound of steamed white rice and eat with a spoon, the same way as curry rice.
-
Beyond rice — S&B also suggests it over mashed potato or with bread, as a dipping sauce for steamed vegetables, or as a sauce for gratin and pot pie.
-
In the sauce — button mushrooms and onion are the traditional partners; thinly sliced beef (sukiyaki/shabu-shabu cut) is the standard protein.
-
Alongside — a light fresh salad balances the richness of the demi-glace.
