About S&B Foods
S&B Foods (エスビー食品株式会社) was founded 1923 by Minejiro Yamazaki in Asakusa, Tokyo. Yamazaki produced Japan's first commercial domestic curry powder — the "Hidori" brand — and the "S&B" mark (combining "Sun" and "Bird") was added to the trademark in 1931. The flagship Red Can Curry Powder launched 1950, the Golden Curry (ゴールデンカレー) roux range followed, and in 1970 S&B pioneered the tube format for wasabi, karashi, and ginger condiments — now a Japanese kitchen staple.

Flavour profile

How to use & enjoy
Japanese curry roux is a make-ahead flavour base: brown your meat and vegetables, simmer with water until tender, then turn off the heat and stir in the broken-up roux blocks until they melt into a thick, glossy sauce. Serve it hot over Japanese short-grain rice for the classic kare raisu, often with a side of Japanese pickles such as fukujinzuke. The same roux is the base for katsu curry (over a breaded cutlet) and curry udon (thinned with dashi and served over thick noodles). S&B also suggests enjoying it with bread or buns, as a sauce for potatoes and meat dishes, or as a dipping sauce for steamed vegetables.
