S&B Shichimi Togarashi (七味唐からし) 15g is Japan's classic seven-spice chilli blend in a small glass table shaker. Red chilli pepper leads, and orange peel, black and white sesame, Japanese pepper (sansho), ginger and seaweed round it out — so it brings aroma and colour to a dish as well as heat. About S&B Foods
S&B Foods (エスビー食品株式会社) was founded 1923 by Minejiro Yamazaki in Asakusa, Tokyo. Yamazaki produced Japan's first commercial domestic curry powder — the "Hidori" brand — and the "S&B" mark (combining "Sun" and "Bird") was added to the trademark in 1931. The flagship Red Can Curry Powder launched 1950, the Golden Curry (ゴールデンカレー) roux range followed, and in 1970 S&B pioneered the tube format for wasabi, karashi, and ginger condiments — now a Japanese kitchen staple.
What is shichimi togarashi?
Shichimi togarashi (七味唐辛子) means "seven-flavour chilli" — a blend built on ground red chilli with six more spices alongside it. S&B describes the traditional formula as two spices chosen for spiciness and five chosen for fragrance, a balance that dates to the Edo period (1600–1867) and spread across Japan from there. That is why shichimi tastes of citrus and sesame as well as chilli, where a plain chilli powder gives heat alone.
How to use & enjoy
Shichimi is a finishing spice — shaken over a dish rather than cooked into it. S&B suggests it as a relish for noodles such as udon and soba, on beef, chicken, pork and fish dishes in place of pepper or mustard, and as a topping for sushi rolls, and lists hot pot, soups and grilled foods among its uses. It is also a standard table seasoning on gyudon, Japan's beef rice bowl.
