About S&B Foods
S&B Foods (エスビー食品株式会社) traces its history to 1923, when founder Minejiro Yamazaki achieved Japan's first successful domestic production of curry powder in Shichiken-cho, Asakusa, Tokyo. Hidori Brand Curry Powder — Japan's first commercial curry powder for household use — followed in 1930, the "S&B" mark (S for sun, B for bird) was registered as a trademark in 1931, and in 1970 S&B pioneered the tube format for wasabi, Japanese-style mustard paste, grated raw garlic and grated raw ginger — now a Japanese kitchen staple.
What is neri wasabi
Neri wasabi (ねりわさび) is Japanese prepared wasabi paste, sold ready to use rather than grated fresh. Like almost all wasabi sold outside a specialist restaurant, it is built on horseradish — a close relative that carries the same volatile heat — with real wasabi added for its rounder, greener aroma. The pungency of both is unusual among chillies and peppers in that it travels upward through the nose rather than burning the tongue, arrives almost instantly and then fades within moments.
How to use & enjoy
Wasabi is served with sushi and sashimi, and is equally traditional with soba. S&B suggests it for udon as well, and describes it as adding "unique flavor and stimulating pungency to many kinds of foods".
