Maruto Seika Co., Ltd. (マルト製菓株式会社) is a confectionery maker founded in 1946 in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, specialising in castella and other semi-moist confections. It is FSSC 22000 food-safety certified and exports its cakes to around twenty countries, with castella making up the majority of those exports.
What is castella
Castella (カステラ) is a Japanese sponge cake introduced to Nagasaki by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. Made from egg, sugar, wheat flour and a touch of starch syrup and honey, it is prized for a dense-yet-moist, fine-textured crumb — distinct from a Western airy sponge.
How to use & enjoy
As this castella comes as a whole uncut loaf, simply slice it to the thickness you like. Maruto suggests enjoying it as an everyday tea-time treat (お茶請け), and recommends it especially with a glass of milk.
