Maruchan Sekihan is a single-serve tray of Japan's celebration rice — glutinous mochigome steamed together with azuki beans until the grains take on the beans' deep russet colour. Maruchan makes it under its Aji no Ippin (味の一品) range with 100% domestically grown glutinous rice and azuki, and prints 着色料無添加 on the pack — no colouring agent is added, and the official ingredient list bears that out: the tray contains rice, beans and salt, and nothing else. It heats through in the microwave in about two minutes, or twelve in simmering water, so a dish that traditionally takes an overnight soak and a steamer comes out of one tray.

Maruchan (マルちゃん) is the brand of Toyo Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (東洋水産株式会社), a Tokyo food manufacturer established in March 1953. What sekihan is
Sekihan (赤飯), literally "red rice", is the rice Japan eats to mark an occasion — birthdays, graduations, weddings, a new job, the first day of something. Red has long been held to drive off misfortune, and the colour here is not dye but the azuki cooking liquor, which stains the glutinous rice as it steams. The texture is the point as much as the colour: mochigome is stickier and chewier than everyday short-grain rice, so sekihan eats denser and holds together in the hand.
