Kuriyama Nagisa Arare Shoyu (渚あられ 醤油味) 90 g — a bite-sized Japanese arare that Kuriyama Beika launched in 1967 and has sold for more than half a century since. It is made by the maker's traditional "shizen-hibi" (自然ひび / natural-crack) method, then finished with two kinds of tamari soy sauce applied twice over — which Kuriyama credits for its rich, deep flavour.
About Kuriyama Beika (Befco)
Kuriyama Beika Co., Ltd. (株式会社栗山米菓), which trades as Befco, is a rice-cracker maker established on 5 February 1949 and still headquartered in Niigata City, in Japan's main rice-growing prefecture. Alongside the Nagisa Arare range it makes the Bakauke (ばかうけ) senbei line.
What is arare?
Arare (あられ) are small, bite-sized Japanese rice crackers made from glutinous mochi rice. They are a distinct category from senbei — the larger, flat crackers pressed from ordinary short-grain rice — and are traditionally eaten by the handful as a snack.
What makes it distinctive
- A 1967-launched long-seller in Kuriyama's Nagisa Arare range.
- Made by the "shizen-hibi" (natural-crack) method, which gives the range its characteristic crackled surface.
- Two kinds of tamari soy sauce, applied twice over rather than once, for a deeper savoury finish.
- Bite-sized arare in a 90 g bag.
