What is hayashi
Hayashi (ハヤシ) is a Japanese Western-style dish of thinly sliced beef and onion in a glossy, demi-glace-and-tomato sauce, served over steamed rice as hayashi raisu. It is milder and more tomato-forward than Japanese curry, and sits alongside curry rice as a staple of Japanese home cooking.
What is retort
A retort pouch holds a fully-cooked sauce that has been sealed and heat-sterilised, so it keeps at room temperature and needs only warming — no cooking, and nothing to add. It is the everyday convenience format in Japan, distinct from the solid roux blocks you simmer with your own ingredients.
How to heat — House Foods' instructions
Microwave: heat the whole box without cutting the pouch — 500 W for 1 minute 30 seconds, 600 W for 1 minute 10 seconds, or 700 W for 1 minute. Not suitable for 800 W or higher, auto/automatic settings, commercial microwaves, ovens or oven toasters.
In a saucepan: keep the inner pouch sealed and boil for 3–5 minutes. Do not cover the pan.
