Bull-Dog Sauce Co., Ltd. began in 1902 as the food wholesaler Misawa-ya Shoten (三澤屋商店), started making sauce in 1905, and was formally incorporated in 1926; it is headquartered in Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Tokyo. Alongside its classic Worcestershire, chunou and tonkatsu sauces, the company makes the Uma Sauce, Premium dressing and Tsukishima monjayaki ranges.
What is Japanese Worcestershire sauce?
Japanese "usuta" sauce (ウスターソース) shares its ancestry with the British condiment but is its own thing — fruit-and-vegetable based, a little sweeter, and used far more broadly. It is the thinnest of the three grades of Japanese brown sauce, which are defined by viscosity: usuta (thin), chunou (中濃, medium-thick), and tonkatsu sauce (thickest). Reach for the thin grade where you want sharpness and flow rather than a clinging glaze.
