About Bull-Dog Sauce
Bull-Dog Sauce Co., Ltd. began in 1902 as the food wholesaler Misawa-ya Shoten (三澤屋商店), started making sauce in 1905, and was formally incorporated in 1926; it is headquartered in Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Tokyo. Alongside its classic Worcestershire, chunou and tonkatsu sauces, the company makes the Uma Sauce, Premium dressing and Tsukishima monjayaki ranges.
What is tonkatsu sauce?
Tonkatsu sauce is Japan's thick, Worcestershire-type brown sauce — a fruit-and-vegetable base sharpened with vinegar and spice, much closer in body to a British brown sauce than to the thin Worcestershire it descends from.
How to use & enjoy
Bull-Dog recommends it for tonkatsu above all, and says it suits okonomiyaki and similar dishes just as well. More broadly it is the standard finishing sauce for crumbed, fried dishes — chicken katsu as much as pork — usually drizzled over the food or served alongside as a dipping sauce.
