Bull-Dog Sauce Co., Ltd. began in 1902 as the food wholesaler Misawa-ya Shoten (三澤屋商店), started making sauce in 1905, and was formally incorporated in 1926; it is headquartered in Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Tokyo. Alongside its classic Worcestershire, chunou and tonkatsu sauces, the company makes the Uma Sauce, Premium dressing and Tsukishima monjayaki ranges.
What is chunou sauce?
Chunou (中濃) means "medium-thick", and it names the middle member of Japan's brown-sauce family — thicker and mellower than a thin Worcestershire, looser and sharper than a tonkatsu sauce. In Japan it is the bottle many households keep as their single all-purpose sauce.
How to use & enjoy
Bull-Dog describes it as an all-purpose sauce that works both poured over fried food and used as a kakushi-aji — a background "hidden flavour" stirred into a dish rather than tasted on its own.
