Marumiya Shiso no Ka Furikake (しその香) is a dry Japanese rice sprinkle built almost entirely around red shiso (perilla) — seasoned shiso leaf with salt, glucose and plum vinegar, and very little else. The plum vinegar gives it a clean, tart edge, and Marumiya's own line for the pack is simply 「しその風味を生かした味付け」: seasoned to bring out the flavour of shiso. Deep-purple flakes in a 30 g resealable zip pouch.
About Marumiya
Marumiya Foods Industry Co., Ltd. (丸美屋食品工業) is a Tokyo food maker founded in April 1951. Furikake heads the company's own description of what it makes, alongside mapo tofu and kamameshi seasoning bases, ochazuke and retort curry — and its furikake shelf runs to the Noritama, Soft Furikake and Mazekomi Wakame ranges.
What's furikake & shiso
Furikake (ふりかけ) is a dry Japanese rice seasoning — a savoury blend sprinkled over hot rice, mixed through for onigiri, or scattered across a bento. Shiso (しそ / 紫蘇), sold in English as perilla or beefsteak plant, is a Japanese herb of the mint family; the red-leaf variety used here is the one that colours umeboshi plums, and it gives this style of furikake its purple flakes and bright, herbal-tart flavour.
How to use & enjoy
Marumiya's guidance on the pack is for mixing it right through the rice: roughly 5–6 g — about a tablespoon — stirred thoroughly into one gō, around 320 g cooked. The same panel goes on to cover onigiri, with a reminder to wash your hands well before shaping them. Beyond rice, the pack suggests it through okayu (rice porridge), in aemono (dressed vegetable salads), and tossed with pasta.
Ingredients
