About S&B Foods
S&B Foods (エスビー食品株式会社) traces its history to 1923, when founder Minejiro Yamazaki achieved Japan's first successful domestic production of curry powder in Shichiken-cho, Asakusa, Tokyo. Hidori Brand Curry Powder — Japan's first commercial curry powder for household use — followed in 1930, the "S&B" mark (S for sun, B for bird) was registered as a trademark in 1931, and the company's landmark ranges include the Akakan "Red Can" curry powder of 1950 and Golden Curry itself, launched in 1966.
What curry roux is
Japanese curry roux is a solid block of fat, flour and spices. Instead of building a sauce from separate spices, the meat and vegetables are simmered in water first, then — as S&B's own recipe for this product directs — the block is broken into pieces and stirred in until it has completely melted, thickening and seasoning the pot in one step. It is the format almost every Japanese household curry is built on.
How to use & enjoy
The standard way to serve it is curry rice (kare raisu) — the finished sauce ladled over steamed white rice. The same sauce makes katsu curry, served over rice with a crumbed, fried pork or chicken cutlet. Curry rice is traditionally served with fukujinzuke, the sweet-tangy red pickled vegetable relish, as a palate-refreshing side.
