Daisho Sukiyaki Hot Pot Soup Base 750g is a ready-to-use broth for sukiyaki. Daisho builds it on the mellow umami of whole-soybean (marudaizu) soy sauce and adds a dashi drawn from Hidaka kombu grown off Hokkaido — the combination the maker credits for its gentle finish. It is a straight-type soup: it goes into the pot as it is, with no diluting, and one 750 g pouch makes a pot for three. Daisho lists it as a product of Kyushu, the southern Japanese island where the company's Fukuoka factory sits.
About Daisho
Daisho Co., Ltd. (株式会社ダイショー) is a Japanese seasoning maker established in December 1966 in Fukuoka — originally as Daisho Foods, set up to make grilled-meat seasoning, and its very first product was a yakiniku sauce called Yakiniku Ichiban. It now works from dual headquarters in Tokyo and Fukuoka, and is known across Japan for yakiniku and steak sauces, seasoned salt-and-pepper, and nabe hot-pot soup bases, under the company motto "creating happiness through deliciousness".
What is sukiyaki?
Sukiyaki (すき焼き) is a Japanese nabe, or hot pot, built around thinly sliced beef simmered in a soy-sauce broth that is sweet as well as savoury. It is cooked in a shallow pan set on the table rather than in the kitchen, so the cooking and the eating happen together.
How to use & enjoy
Heat the soup in the pot at the table and add ingredients in stages, so everyone helps themselves as each thing finishes cooking. The pieces that go into a sukiyaki pot are thinly sliced beef, grilled tofu, shirataki noodles, long onion (negi), chrysanthemum greens (shungiku), and mushrooms such as enoki and shiitake. Cooked pieces are customarily dipped in a small bowl of beaten raw egg before eating.
