Nisshin's soy-sauce-flavour karaage flour, from its "中華街" (Chinatown) range — a long-seller launched in 1995, and from Nisshin, Japan's No. 1 karaage-flour brand at around 59% of the domestic home-use market. The flavour is inspired by Chinatown-style karaage: soy sauce and aromatic vegetables give a fragrant, savoury profile and a crisp, light coating, while the chicken stays juicy. About Nisshin Seifun Welna
Nisshin Seifun Welna (日清製粉ウェルナ) is the consumer-foods company of the Nisshin Seifun Group, one of Japan's largest flour-milling groups; it was renamed from Nisshin Foods to Nisshin Seifun Welna in 2022. Under its main "Nisshin" brand it makes home-use flours and a wide range of pre-mixes (okonomiyaki, takoyaki, karaage, tempura, and pancake mixes), alongside its Ma-Ma (マ・マー) and Aodo (青の洞窟) pasta and pasta sauces, imported Di Cecco pasta, and dried udon and soba. Karaage (唐揚げ) is Japanese fried chicken — bite-sized pieces of marinated chicken coated in seasoned flour or starch and deep-fried for a thin, crisp shell over juicy meat. A national-staple home-cooked dish; karaage flour mixes deliver the seasoning and coating in one step.
How to use & enjoy
A karaage flour mix is a pre-seasoned dry coating: the chicken is tossed in the mix and deep-fried, with no batter, egg wash, or separate marinade needed. Although chicken thigh is the classic choice, the same coating also works well on chicken breast, fish, pork, and tofu. Karaage is one of Japan's most popular bento fillings — the crisp coating holds up well after cooling — and a classic izakaya (pub) appetiser, and it's just as good piled over steamed rice as a karaage-don bowl. It's traditionally served with a squeeze of lemon and Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise.
